Rest at Les Aldudes in France

Monday 9th Sept 2002

There was no urgency to arise today, neither a hike to demand nor a shop to entice, for the single épicerie would not open till after lunch. A stretch and a check told little, no blisters, bruises or strains; muscular ache only comes after a second day's rest anyway. Just one minor ailment, the corn on my right foot, which was to plague me all through the trek; it actually seemed to be worse for wear after use of flat sandals, which were my sole alternative to boots.

I arose to discover the major advantage of this location; free internet access in a small room adjacent to the hostel. The warden had given us a swipe card to gain access, which was on a 'first come first served' basis; there was no sign of any competing locals, so I settled to writing and communicating. Abrupt departure from urban life had created a stark contrast in respect of social life, and I hankered connection through that familiar keyboard; even if I must overcome the digital dis-orientation posed by a French keyboard layout!

Duties then called; boots to wax, clothes to wash and then the drying. Our rags were re-positioned at least three times as the sun dodged behind walls and trees; the tent needed turning several times also. Brunch was a solitary affair as we had the great courtyard and sports-room all to ourselves; the one other French couple present the night before had vanished before we even arose. The food was not especially tasty, as reserves were getting a bit thin; tonight would bring tasty choices after the shop visit. Karen_comments

We were there, bang on the minute of opening at 3:30pm. There was choice alright, but not exactly what we wanted. No muesli, no oats and even, no bread at all; for that we must wait till the bakery opened at 8am tomorrow. But there was fresh food; salad and veg' for supper, fruit and yoghurt for breakfast. As for the trekking fayre, pasta would go with sardines, and prunes would go with ... tapioca; really? It had to be tried for there was little else!

A return trip to the computer room was rewarding, for a handful of faithful friends had already replied from their office desks; that made all the efforts worthwhile. Then we settled to preparing supper, but kitchen facilities were sorely missed. Our fee did not include use of hob or cooker, for there was none; we must use the CampingGaz stove. The table-tennis boards provisioned amply for working surface though. Then we sat outside to enjoy the last of the yellowing sun. Tomorrow, we would be fitter and stronger and all would be well; we just needed the weather to co-operate.
